Tour Programs

English Motets
During the renaissance, musical composition flourished, but it was a time of great change, fuelled by religious division. This programme traces music written by some of the English Renaissance masters over a period of two-hundred years, encompassing florid medieval-sounding pieces by Forest and Sheryngham, intricately woven polyphonic works by Tallis and Byrd, and the beautiful simplicity of Gibbons and Tomkins. In anticipation of his 400th anniversary year, we pay special attention to the music of William Byrd, one of the foremost composers of the Renaissance in Europe.

Josquin’s Legacy
Courts in renaissance Italy were meeting places for some of the greatest musicians from across Europe. The Court at Ferrara became a leading centre: many of the Franco-Flemish school passed through its gates and perhaps the most notable of these is Josquin des Prez. This programme contextualises some of the ‘jewels in the crown’ of Italian renaissance repertoire by tracing themes of pedagogy and patronage in northern Italy over 150 years. Highlights include Ockeghem’s glorious Intemerata Dei mater, and the poignant work Josquin wrote on the death of his master, Nymphes des bois.

Wishing Tree
Embark on a captivating vocal journey with The Gesualdo Six as they curate a collection of exquisite vocal consort pieces. Experience Renaissance works celebrating nature and love by Cornysh and Byrd, alongside lyrical melodies by Ferrabosco and Gibbons. Discover how contemporary composers breathe life into verses by Christina Rossetti and Kathleen Jamie. Immerse yourself in skilful re-imaginings of traditional folk songs from the British Isles that beautifully tie the sequence together.

Sustainability

There is no easy way to reduce our carbon footprint, however as an ensemble, we are committed to doing all that we practically can to do so.

In addition to providing a grant to singers to allow them to purchase reusable items for travel, the group has agreed to the following steps:

  • To use air travel as minimally as possible, and where practical, travel by train.
  • To endeavour to plan an efficient touring calendar so that, where possible, multiple concerts are scheduled when travelling abroad.
  • To offset carbon emissions when it is not possible to use public transport, and subscribe to Ecologi, with the aim of becoming a climate positive workforce.
  • Where possible, to share one vehicle, and when hiring cars, to endeavour to opt for hybrid or electric models.

The group encourages its members to turn down room cleaning when staying in hotels, to reuse toiletries, and to travel with reusable water bottles, coffee cups and cutlery.

Members have also agreed to take personal responsibility to minimise the use of single-use plastics while on tour.
